In Defense of the Prosecution: The Case Against Socrates

September 18 @ 5:00 pm - 6:15 pm EDT

To most readers of Plato’s Apology, the trial of Socrates seems an obvious travesty of justice. But philosopher and classist Dr. Kirk Sanders of the University of Illinois thinks that the situation is perhaps not as clear cut as it may first appear. By supplementing the account of Plato’s Apology with the testimony of Xenophon’s Socratic writings, Dr. Sanders will attempt both to provide a more nuanced view of the nature and possible motivation of the charges against Socrates and even to suggest that the case for Socrates’ guilt (at least within the context of ancient Athenian law and custom) was a good deal stronger than usually credited.
