Guest Lecture – Nicholas E. Harman, MS, PE, BC.GE (Geotechnical Design Policy Engineer at SCDOT)
About the Speaker
Nicholas E. Harman, MS, PE, BC.GE serves as the Geotechnical Design Policy Engineer at the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) Headquarters. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the Virginia Military Institute and a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering (Geotechnical) from Virginia Tech.
Mr. Nick is a Board-Certified Geotechnical Engineer (BC.GE) and a licensed Professional Engineer (PE). He brings extensive experience in geotechnical design, policy development, and infrastructure engineering, providing technical leadership and statewide guidance for geotechnical practice at SCDOT.
About the Topic
South Carolina has a diverse geologic framework that has shaped its landscapes, natural resources, and engineering challenges. This presentation will introduce the major geologic regions of the state, including the Blue Ridge, Piedmont, and Coastal Plain provinces, and describe how differences in rock type, weathering, and soil formation influence site conditions. Key transitions such as the Fall Line and the development of saprolite and residual soils will be highlighted to explain why subsurface conditions vary significantly across relatively short distances. Examples from across the state will be used to illustrate how these geologic characteristics affect construction, foundation behavior, and geotechnical design in practice, along with the effects of seismic design.
