FAQs

What if I locked myself out of my room or apartment?

Head over to the Area Desk, which is staffed 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. The Desk Assistant will provide you a temporary key to access your space. Don’t forget to return this key by 7pm the following business day. If you fail to return the key, your locks will be changed, and you will incur a $100 charge.

What happens if my key is lost or stolen?

This would cause a lock change charge from University Housing. Most often, this is due to a lost key or a temporary key that is not returned by the deadline. The housing contract states: “If a key is lost or not returned when occupancy is terminated, or if a temporary key is not returned within the required time, the door lock(s) will be re-cored and new keys will be made at the responsible resident’s expense.

We do our best to hold residents responsible for the safety of their own key. We sometimes do charge students for lost keys, but we will request information about each situation to determine the best course of action.

If you lose your key, head to the Area Desk. Please let the Desk Assistant know you have lost your key and need to have your lock changed. The Desk Assistant will issue you a temporary key and the Lock Shop will work on a lock change. Once that is completed, you will receive a note on your door letting you know your new key is available to pick up at the Area Desk. Please pick up new keys within 36 hours.

Please note, there is a charge of $30 to get a new card, find more TigerOne ID information HERE. If this occurs after business hours, head to your Area Desk. How long can I have a temporary key out for?

Temporary keys must be returned before 7pm the following business day (Monday-Thursday). Temporary keys that are checked out on Friday-Sunday should be returned before 7pm on Monday. If they are not returned, your lock will be changed, and you will incur a $100 fee.

What happens if I don’t return my temporary key?

If you do not return your temporary key, a lock change will be completed on your space. You will be charged a $100 lock change fee. You will need to pick up your new keys at the Area Desk when the lock change has occurred.

You will want to head over to the Area Desk to get assistance. Please bring in both pieces of the key with you. You must turn in the top part of your key, which reads “State of S.C.; Do Not Duplicate.” If the other part of the key is stuck in your door, please let the Desk Assistant know. They will call the Lock Shop to help get the piece out. The Desk Assistant will check out a temporary key to you so you can access your space. The Lock Shop will cut you a new key at no cost, and you will be emailed when it is time to pick up your new key. Please return your temporary key at the Area Desk and pick up your new key within 48 hours of notification.

It’s really late and I am concerned about walking to the Area Desk at night, what should I do?

We recommend calling TigerTransit! Information on this service can be found HERE. Here are some TigerTrasit details:

  • Tiger Transit operates 6pm-2am on Monday-Thursday; 6pm-6am on Friday-Sunday.
  • During peak times (6pm-11pm), a rider would have to schedule a “to” ride and then schedule a “from” ride to go back to their community. Even though a key transaction takes a short amount of time, the driver will not be able to wait for the rider. If directing students to use Tiger Transit, please share with them that it may take a little while and the service is supporting all of campus.
  • During non-peak times (after 11pm), it’s much more likely that a driver could wait for the rider to hop back on for a return trip. Please talk to the driver to see if they can accommodate this.

If you need a to access the Area Desk after TigerTransit hours, please call your respective Area Desk and the Desk Assistant will work with you to get you access.
