SUMMARY:In Defense of the Prosecution: The Case Against Socrates
DESCRIPTION:To most readers of Plato’s Apology\, the trial of Socrates seems an obvious travesty of justice. But philosopher and classist Dr. Kirk Sanders of the University of Illinois thinks that the situation is perhaps not as clear cut as it may first appear. By supplementing the account of Plato’s Apology with the testimony of Xenophon’s Socratic writings\, Dr. Sanders will attempt both to provide a more nuanced view of the nature and possible motivation of the charges against Socrates and even to suggest that the case for Socrates’ guilt (at least within the context of ancient Athenian law and custom) was a good deal stronger than usually credited.

SUMMARY:Constitution Day Talk with Dr. Kevin Gutzman
DESCRIPTION:“James Madison:  Constitutionalist” with Dr. Kevin Gutzman\nAt age 25\, James Madison found himself the youngest man in the Virginia Convention that made Virginia the first colony to declare independence\, wrote the first American declaration of rights\, and wrote the first American constitution—the Virginia Declaration of Rights and Constitution of 1776. His effect in that assemblage was monumental\, and through the rest of his long political career\, he would take the lead in writing\, ratifying\, implementing\, and laying out one of the two classic approaches to interpreting the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights as well.\nAbout Our Speaker\nKevin R. C. Gutzman\, M.P.Aff.\, J.D.\, Ph.D.\, is Professor of History at Western Connecticut State University and author of six books—two in American Constitutional History (including the New York Times bestseller The Politically Incorrect Guide to the Constitution) and four in the history of the early American republic\, among them James Madison and the Making of America and\, most recently\, The Jeffersonians: The Visionary Presidencies of Jefferson\, Madison\, and Monroe.\nHosted by: Lyceum Fellows Program\nAdditional Information can be found at: https://clemson.campuslabs.com/engage/event/11440634

SUMMARY:Branford Marsalis Quartet – Belonging Tour - An Evening with Branford Marsalis
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by the Ruth B. Wood Foundation\nThe Branford Marsalis Quartet brings the Belonging Tour to Clemson to kick off the Brooks Center’s 2025–2026 season. Saxophonist Branford Marsalis is one of the most influential and revered figures in contemporary music. The NEA Jazz Master\, GRAMMY Award winner and Tony Award nominee is equally at home performing concertos with symphony orchestras and sitting in with members of the Grateful Dead\, but the core of his musical universe remains the Branford Marsalis Quartet. This celebrated ensemble is revered for its uncompromising interpretation of a kaleidoscopic range of both original compositions and jazz and popular classics. After the GRAMMY-nominated Upward Spiral\, on which guest vocalist Kurt Elling was seamlessly integrated into the group\, the Quartet followed up with the GRAMMY-nominated album The Secret Between the Shadow and the Soul\, its most emotionally wide-ranging and melody-driven collection to date. This spring\, the Quartet made its Blue Note Records debut with the release of Belonging\, a full album interpretation of Keith Jarrett’s 1974 ECM album of the same name.\nHosted by: Brooks Center\nAdditional Information can be found at: https://clemson.campuslabs.com/engage/event/11564200
