SUMMARY:What is Religion Now? And Why Does It Still Matter?
DESCRIPTION:Sociologist Sam Perry believes that religion still matters. And we need to understand it now more than ever. But “religion” is changing. Our cherished assumptions about what “religion” is and how it works are being overturned by transformations brought on by modernity and political polarization\, on the one hand\, and insights from the social sciences\, on the other. In this talk\, Dr. Perry\, the Sam K. Viersen Presidential Professor of Sociology at the University of Oklahoma\, will push us to approach “religion” in a new way\, both in our personal understanding and as an academic endeavor. And he’ll explain how a more enlightened\, evidence-based approach to “religion” can help shed light on the dramatic and disturbing transformations we see taking place in our society and around the world.

SUMMARY:9/10 Statistics Seminar Series: Feng Ye\, Clemson University
DESCRIPTION:Title: Physics-Guided Data Science Modeling – An Example from Offshore Wind Energy Systems Abstract: Advancements in data science and machine learning models is revolutionizing many fields. Yet\, bridging those advancements to engineering applications poses significant challenges related to how those models generalize and adhere to the underlying principles and motivating physics of engineering systems. This presentation highlights recent efforts to bridge the physical and data-driven paradigms by constructing physics-guided data science models for improved offshore wind energy forecasting and operation. In the first part of the talk\, I will present a multivariate statistical method based on an integro-difference equation model for spatio-temporal wind energy forecasting. Embedded within the statistical model\, an advanced deep learning architecture acts as a “physics extractor” to dynamically estimate physically meaningful kernel parameters from high-dimensional operational data that is difficult to process using standard statistical machinery. In the second part of the talk\, I will present a machine-learning-based approach for wind energy modeling that is characterized by a physically motivated covariance function that unleashes the power of machine learning while guiding the data learning process to adhere to the physical principles of wind field formation and propagation. These models inherit the merits of both data science (modern AI/ML\, statistics) and physics (physical models\, first principles)\, offering inherent interpretability\, uncertainty quantification\, and accurate predictions to support intelligent operations in renewable energy systems.     Bio: Feng Ye is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering at Clemson University. He received his Ph.D. in Industrial and Systems Engineering and an M.Sc. in Statistics from Rutgers University–New Brunswick. The overall topic of his research work is to formulate statistical and machine learning methods to improve the forecasting\, operations and maintenance of wind energy systems. His research aims to advance the integration of physics\, statistics\, and modern AI/ML by constructing physics-guided data science models for improved renewable energy forecasting and operation. He is the winner of the QCRE Best Student Poster Competition at the 2024 IISE Annual Conference\, the Best Paper of the Energy Systems Track at the 2023 IISE Annual Conference\, and the Best Student Paper Competition of the Sustainability Track at the 2022 INFORMS Annual Meeting. He is also a recipient of the New Jersey Wind Institute Fellowship and the Outstanding Graduate Student Award from the Rutgers ISE Department. He is a member of INFORMS\, IISE\, and IEEE.

SUMMARY:In Defense of the Prosecution: The Case Against Socrates
DESCRIPTION:To most readers of Plato’s Apology\, the trial of Socrates seems an obvious travesty of justice. But philosopher and classist Dr. Kirk Sanders of the University of Illinois thinks that the situation is perhaps not as clear cut as it may first appear. By supplementing the account of Plato’s Apology with the testimony of Xenophon’s Socratic writings\, Dr. Sanders will attempt both to provide a more nuanced view of the nature and possible motivation of the charges against Socrates and even to suggest that the case for Socrates’ guilt (at least within the context of ancient Athenian law and custom) was a good deal stronger than usually credited.

SUMMARY:Genetics and Biochemistry Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Kozubowski earned his Bachelors and then Masters degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the Medical University of Warsaw in Poland. He completed his Doctorate under the mentorship of Kelly Tatchell at Louisiana State University Medical Center\, studying mechanisms of cell division and morphogenesis (more specifically the biology of septin proteins and related cell signaling involving the PP1 phosphatase homologue in baker’s yeast). He continued similar investigations under the guidance of Danny Lew\, when he moved to Duke University for his postdoctoral studies. Subsequently\, he performed studies in several labs at Duke (including Joseph Heitman\, Andy Alspaugh\, and John Perfect) investigating the biology and pathogenicity of a human fungal pathogen Cryptococcus neoformans. In 2013 he established research program at Clemson University with the main aim to elucidate mechanisms of cell division and stress response in C. neoformans.

SUMMARY:NSF I-Corps Faculty Workshop
DESCRIPTION:CURF will be hosting an NSF I-Corps Workshop. This informative hour-long session will provide useful information about the I-Corps program and Clemson’s membership in the Southeast Hub. Attendees can talk with our staff and learn how they can play a part in translating their research efforts from the lab to the real world. Workshop Outcomes: -Provide participants with a new framework to view their research goals. -Expose participants to the entrepreneurial mindset\, and how it can help guide their research and career. -Inspire researchers to explore–through outside stakeholders and their own community–how their research/discoveries might be implemented for societal impact. -Provide a set of tools to shape participants’ research objectives to be more use-inspired and impactful. -Reduce psychological barriers and conceptual misunderstandings about innovation that prevent people from seeing themselves as inventors\, innovators\, and entrepreneurs.
